Sales of previously owned homes climbed to 5 million units on a seasonally adjusted basis in July, reports the National Association of Realtors. The 3.1-percent increase was attributed to a wave of buyers who grabbed up bargain-priced properties in the U.S. markets suffering most from the housing slump. The gain was nearly double that anticipated by a sample group of economists, who had called for an increase of 1.6 percent, but the volume remains more than 13 percent below year-ago levels. The price of a home sold in July, meanwhile, was off 7.1 percent from this time last year, to a median of $212,000.
